So I went ahead and made me a guitar. I got me a cigar box, I cut me a round hole in the middle of it, take me a little piece of plank, nailed it onto that cigar box, and I got me some screen wire and I made me a bridge back there and raised it up high enough that it would sound inside that little box, and got me a tune out of it. I kept my tune and I played from then on. —Lightnin' Hopkins

Tombstone Diddley Bow?

Yes you read right, a Diddley on a tombstone. Lonnie Pitchford's headstone has a Diddley Bow on it, which oddly enough the stone was paid for by a Mr John Fogerty.

heres my latest Diddley Bow it's a Resonator 4" Aluminium Spun cone - 27" scale now fitted with a Flatwound 56 Gauge string  sounds great acoustically and plugged in it has a Magnetic Pickup tucked away under the coverplate

My 2 d-bows

Happy Comment by Happy on October 20, 2011 at 8:34pm

Hello, I am new here. I am really getting into make didley bows. I like to make the "guitar like" ones.. I think I can call them that. I have made two short scale ones. The first one, below I made from a peice of red oak for the neck, and the body is one of those pine collector box shelf that I bought for a dollar. I also made a piezo pickup from a radio shack piezo buzzer and installed a 1/4 jack in the bottom. Because the inside has many square spaces, it resonates well.

The 2nd picture is another didley bow that I made, the neck is pine, the diamond pattern I made using black marker over masking tape. The body is a pop corn tin cover that has a great edge on. I was able to install a 1/4 jack in that one as well with a piezo pickup. I ant to install a volume pot on this one. I see that Mr.Ted has a wiring diagram out the pickup and volume pot, I just need to figure out if that "dot" on the volume pot suppose to be a drop of solder.

Kevin, here's some other views of the Ted Bau to give you an idea how it's made.  Here's the photo album.

Hey Ted! I tried running the string thru the can myself. With the right can, big wire & scale length; it'd be a great Diddley Bass.

Well I now have some other starting points for mine. The two with cans, are the strings run through the can itself? I imagine it's got a deep tone.

Thanks Kevin.  The top one is 'the Bird of Prey'.  It is parts from a chair someone had put out for trash.  I think the wood is cherry.
